What is NaNoWrimo?

Started in 1999, NaNoWriMo encourages aspiring writers to start or complete their novel while the rest of us prepare for the Holidays.

As the Halloween decorations come down at the end of October, there is a sense of inevitability in the air.  On November 1, the Christmas music starts in the department stores and the local grocery store will begin showcasing ingredients for holiday standards like Green Bean Casserole, Dressing and of course, Pumpkin Pie.  The weather gets colder and there is a sense of knowing that the Holiday season is upon us—and so we forgive our friends and family members for not calling or coming around so much.  After all, everyone is busy.  Since 1999, however, there has been something aside from the impending Holiday season that can draw people away—NaNoWriMo.This content is for members only.

Geeky Ways of Exploring Bisexuality

The Sims 3 World Adventures for bi gamers

Do you think you might be bisexual! Awesome! We’re glad to have you! What does it mean to be bi? If you’re still are a bit unsure, that’s fine. There are a few ways to figure things out. You can go to a bar, drink some “liquid courage” and flirt and kiss with the person of your choice. I don’t recommend that one. This invariably leads to puking in the toilet of a nasty bar bathroom and lots of confused and hurt feelings on everyone’s part. Do lots of people explore their sexuality this way? Yes. Do I recommend it personally? No way. It is my personal policy to avoid things that can end with me kneeling in suspicious substances in a strange restroom while re-enjoying my last burrito and regretting that last shot. So short of getting drunk and tongue wrestling strangers what is a possibly bisexual person to do? Well, if you are a geek like me there are a few options; tv and video games!

Video games such as The Sims, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fable 2 and Mass Effect 3” allow you to make yourself an avatar, play a fascinating exciting story and explore your sexuality safely and sticky floor free! Not all of the games are perfect though, in Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2, same-sex options are not available to male characters, but the people behind the games have confirmed that in [in version three] it will be an option. REVIEW: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Rarely is there a saga so intricate as Harry Potter. Sure, Star Wars is intricate and even Lord of the Rings is very in depth. In fact it could very easily be argued that without those two fantasy sagas Harry Potter could not be as successful as it has been. Author J.K. Rowling envisioned not only the world in which Wizards and Witches lived alongside Muggles but also the life of Harry Potter himself—and the lives of all of his teachers and friends. Fans of the Harry Potter series see this coming to fruition in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This content is for members only.

History’s Greatest Bisexual Men?

Was Abraham Lincoln bisexual? Noted psychologist and Kinsey researcher C.A. Tripp presents a compelling case in The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln. Image: Want It All

What do Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X and Jesus have in common? While that question may sound like the beginning to a really off color joke it turns out these men do have a lot in common. All are champions of equality and peace—even while Malcolm X is not known for pacifism as say Gandhi and Jesus are, his message is similar—all of them are men and all of them were killed violently. Also—according to recent books—all of them may have been bisexual.

Starting with The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln by C.A. Tripp—noted Kinsey psychologist and author of The Homosexual MatrixTripp presents a case for Lincoln’s sexuality. Tripp seemingly relies solely on his reputation as a Kinsey researcher to make purely circumstantial evidence credible and present Abraham Lincoln as a man who may have been married and had relationships with women throughout his life—but probably would have been happier in the company of men. Indeed, stories of allowing a Union army Captain to share his bed during the Civil War while Mary Todd Lincoln was away—through an extended affair with his best friend, directly prior to his marriage, would seem to present a compelling case. Several chapters outline Lincoln’s awkwardness with women and the fact that he seemed to feel marriage was necessary only to ensure his success as a politician. The author also presents “scientific” evidence, suggesting that Lincoln reached puberty at an earlier age and therefore was more open to “unconventional” relationships as was postulated by Alfred Kinsey himself. When all is said and done, however, the evidence is purely circumstantial peppered with the author’s own experience and the research of Alfred Kinsey—although the evidence of Lincoln sharing the bed of several men throughout his life is corroborated enough to raise eyebrows. This content is for members only.

Bi Social Network is pleased to announce that Ann Herendeen will join us on Bi Talk Radio Wednesday, April 6 at 5 p.m. CST.

Lover of the written word, you can read her first novel called Phyllida and the Brotherhood of Philander (HarperCollins 2008) in this salacious period piece of bisexual “lust, love and secrets, set against the backdrop of Regency England.”

Herendeen’snew book Pride/Prejudice, as we get a big taste of naughtiness, in this latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s masterpiece. Oh my, what might be happening with Mr. Darcy, Mr Bingley and Elizabeth Bennett? Grab this book and join us on this journey of discovery.

The Bi Social Book Club Starts Now!

Read Pride/Prejudice along with me as we start a new adventure of bisexual reading called “The Bi Social Book Club.” At the end of the month in April, join us online in our chat community and learn and share all that we read. This isn’t your momma’s book club, expect to chat about adult themes—so sorry kiddies, you must be 18-years-old or older to join in this chat fest.

Pride/?Prejudice “fills the gaps” in Austen’s story, daring to imagine the full truth suggested by the original. What is Darcy’s real motivation for preventing Bingley’s marriage to Elizabeth’s beautiful and virtuous sister Jane? How can Darcy reconcile his desire for Elizabeth with his determination to save his friend from a similar entanglement? And what is the disturbing history behind Darcy’s tortured relationship with his foster brother, George Wickham?

Crisis and Growth: Bisexuality in Seeking Sara Summers

When Susan Gabriel’s Seeking Sara Summers (Wild Lily Arts, 2008) opens, the very same Sara Summers Stanton is a major crossroads. The 44-year-old has three children already grown and out of the house. Her marriage to Grady is stagnant and she has lost one breast to cancer, for which she will have to continue treatment. Sara seems stuck in the fictional Western Massachusetts town of Beacon, teaching English in the very same classroom where she studied with her good friend Julia David.

In the first section of the book, Sara finds a way to reconnect with Julia, who sends Sara an invitation to her art opening in Tuscany. The normally self-effacing Sara somehow finds the gumption to get time off and get herself to Italy. In the second section of the book, Sara and Julia deepen their relationship in ways unforeseen even to them, all the while enjoying the splendors of the Italian countryside. Eventually Sara has to return home, having grown in more ways than she could have imagined. Continue reading »
