Bi Social Network mental health initiatives kicks off with online support staff Psychologist Ronete Cohen

July 22, 2011—Bi Social Network moves into ground-breaking initiatives to help the bisexual community and its allies understand mental health education and how it affects every facets and demographic of youth, the elderly, race, class and gender—just to name a few. Psychologist, Ronete Cohen believes in our message to educate the public about bisexual life; along with supporting gay, lesbian and transgender members of our community.

“Bi Life with Ronete Cohen”

Ronete (Pronounced Ron-neat) will join us in two ways—first; she will take questions and answers (Q&A) which members will send via her email. The goal is when you help one person most likely you will help the population of the bisexual community with the same issues. It doesn’t matter where you are, our international network will support all types of questions regarding, sexuality, homelessness, self-worth issues, peer and family acceptance, just to name a few of the many topics that will be tackled—and all support will be held in the strictest of confidence under her practice via our web portal.

Secondly, Cohen will be a featured columnist called Bi Life with Ronete Cohen, where she’ll engage with our members by writing monthly thought provoking articles that will be current to the lives of our community, which will challenge us, celebrate us, support us and nurture our needs.

Ronete Cohen MA is an experienced psychologist with a BA and MA in Psychology from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her further training includes: a 3-year theoretical and clinical course in Intensive Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (IE-DP) with Ferruccio Osimo MD, Psychiatrist (former President of the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association); and Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (STDP)/Affect Phobia Therapy (APT) training with Kristin Osborn MA, Psychotherapist (Associate and Researcher at the Short-Term Psychotherapy Research Program, Harvard Medical School). She is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the Dutch Institute of Psychologists (NIP), and the Dutch Association of Child and Youth Psychotherapists (VKJP).

In the Netherlands and in London, Ronete Cohen works with children, adolescents and adults of diverse nationalities, cultural backgrounds, beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.  Her expertise includes: giftedness; eating disorders; affirmative bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender psychotherapy; and helping those raised in narcissistic families who often end up in abusive relationships and/or resort to self-damaging behaviours. Her practice, The Rainbow Couch, also offers low-threshold tolerant and affirmative online psychotherapy for members of the bisexual, lesbian, gay, and transgender community who would otherwise not have access to such therapy.

Ronete was Diva magazine’s (a UK lesbian/bisexual glossy) advice columnist from 2005 to 2009. She has been Zij aan Zij magazine’s (a Dutch lesbian/bisexual glossy) advice columnist since 2006. She is an active opponent of reparative treatment and has written various articles on the subject, helping (often behind the scenes) lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists in different countries who are trying to fight it. She has also written a chapter (Using Intensive Experiential-Dynamic Psychotherapy to Treat an Underachieving Gifted Adolescent) for a book, Theory and Practice of Experiential Dynamic Therapy (edited by Ferruccio Osimo and Mark Stein), which will be published in London by Karnac in 2012.

To contact Ronete Cohen MA, please email her at ronete.cohen@bisocialnetwork,com to submit questions for our upcoming featured column called Bi Life with Ronete Cohen or visit her website at www.rainbowcouch.com to learn more about her practice.

Adrienne Williams has been invited by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in recognition of activism for the bisexual community

June 12, 2011—Bi Social Network is proud to announce Adrienne Williams has been selected to represent the ‘B’ in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community—by letter of invitation in celebration of LGBT Pride Month, to be held at The White House on Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

Bi Social Network is an online media network that covers topics including: entertainment news, social issues, and politics in the community since late 2008 and showcases bisexuals in all walks of diversity; sharing unique bisexual content not readily available in other national or gay and lesbian outlets.

In November of 2010, Bi Social Network launched its first campaign called ‘I am Visible,’ to send a strong message that bisexuals are visible in every facets of the global community and to acknowledge the issues and challenges that the bisexual community faces regarding biphobia and bi-erasure in media outlets, entertainment and social issues. Using words, imagery, interviews and video, Bi Social Network gives the bisexual community a voice to speak out about their lives in positive ways.

I continue to be in awe of being just a small voice regarding bisexual leadership around the nation and the world. I can’t imagine anyone from the bisexual community NOT being chosen for this honor, and I humbly accept this gift and will do my utmost to make the bisexual community proud. Activism was never my goal in the pure sense, but I know with my strong voice, I could never just sit by and watch without speaking up for the voiceless   –Adrienne Williams

Bi Social Network would like to thank our growing readership of members and listeners on our website(s) and Bi Talk Radio programs—without the continued support this would never have been possible. We want to thank our past and current writers, photographers, ‘I am Visible’ contributors and leaders of the bisexual community for their encouragement and support as we move forward to bigger things as we help our community become fully visible.

Founder of Bi Social Network Selected for National Media Institute for People of Color and the bisexuals community

April 23, 2011—Bi Social Network is proud to announce Adrienne Williams has been selected to represent the ‘b’ in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to showcase fair and accurate representation of bisexuals in media by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) new program for the National Media Institute for People of Color, spearheaded by the Arcus Foundation, a foundation that donates to non-profit organizations who support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender human rights.

Williams received the news on Wednesday, April 20 from GLAAD via phone and email, while present at the Chicago Commission on Human Relations’ Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues; which just  endorsed “The Bisexual Invisibility: Impacts and Recommendations” report for bisexuals in Chicago.

Williams started Bi Social Network in December of 2008 and has worked to spotlight bisexual visibility in entertainment, printed news media and new online media outlets. Bi Social Network also started a yearlong campaign called ‘I am Visible,’ to speak to bisexuals that they matter in the community of LGBT rights and acceptance, using video, imagery and personal stories.

This is a great time for the bisexual community and people with diverse backgrounds to be heard and work and come together. We need to present more diversity in media whether bisexual stories, transgender persons or presenting a wealth of different people in our community, we rarely get to see or can be missing in the LGBT community. With this opportunity comes responsibility and I will take this time to reflect on the challenges needed to move bisexual visibility forward. Though, I don’t consider myself an activist by any means, I see myself as one voice for entertainment media and to help share the message we have been trying to present to all.  I hope the role I’m given will be the start of moving onward –Adrienne Williams, Founder of Bi Social Network

The POC Media Training Institute event kicks off on Friday, July 22-24 in Los Angeles, which selected a handful of candidates from applications submitted. They’ll prepare participates for media development, coaching, on-camera and radio interviews and ongoing leadership roles in the community.

Bi Social Network Launches Yearlong Campaign on Bi-visibility, To Stop bi-phobia and bi-erasure

Chicago, IL , September 3, 2010—Bi Social Network is proud to announce our year long Bi-Visibility Campaign, to promote positive role models of bisexuals in opposite and same-sex partnerships and individual lives throughout the spectrum of our demographics. Bi Social Network and our allies will expose biphobia and intolerance in the straight, gay, lesbian and other communities who see “coming out bisexual’ as a crime, a joke, not real or screaming for attention.

The bisexual community has seen, particularly in the last several years a growing use of hate language within our own communities—from online web communities, to local businesses, to public celebrities, community activist and national platforms. We have equally seen a bi-erasure effect in major LGBT publications, in film, politics and celebrities who have gone back into the bisexual closet for fear of being “needy, greedy and liars with their peers.

Goals and Phases

This campaign will exposure, uplift, enrage, empower and affect millions of bisexuals and our allies that want to stand up and be apart of a great BLGT community. We are in fact on a strong mission to make known biphobia and bi-erasure with stories, words, discussions, radio podcasts, news, interviews, images and imagination.

  1. Phase 1: We will start with several phases throughout the year. The first phase will be using imagery in the form of photography.
  2. Phase 2: We will move into the social media on our show Bi Talk Radio, Facebook, Twitter and mobile podcasting throughout this process.
  3. Phase 3: We will move into learning about each other lives, by way of news and interviews via printed media.
  4. Phase 4: We will move into the media of motion storytelling. Personal stories of bisexuals throughout the nation; locally, nationally and internationally with video.

This movement is for the famous and for the non famous. For the young and for the old; for the locally bisexual and for others who are far way. There are no limits to this campaign. Your passion to tell your story is all your need.

To learn more, please contact us if you want to participate, educate, sponsor or interview us.
